Apple takes its most aggressive step yet!

24 11 2009

Apple has been a company that has stood the test of time when it comes to being attacked in advertising.  No matter what other people say about Apple, they always seem to take it in stride.

Not this time!

Apple, although still rather innocently, has decided to spice up its campaign for it’s iPhone 3GS.  The ads now specifically target the iPhones unique capacities (such as the ability to use certain apps while still on the phone) which have been targeted by the droid campaign.

The ads now specifically ask, “can your phone do that?”

This is the first time that Apple has directly pointed a finger at the competition of the 3GS, and it is a brave call indeed.

Allen Iverson… done?

24 11 2009

Perhaps the biggest disappointment in the NBA this year (and last year) is Allen Iverson.

He started off the season in Memphis, and he electrocuted an excited city which led to increased season ticket holder turnout, but here is the catch: he didn’t even stay on the team long enough to make his home debut!

Allen Iverson ended up taking a hiatus to “reflect on personal matters,” which apparently meant that he was going to take some time to think about how bad his team sucked and how the heck he was going to complain to get out of there.  For those who are unaware, Allen Iverson played in the NBA Finals maybe 8 years ago, and for a player that is still capable of putting up a 35 point game, this is a tragedy.

He has displayed motives so selfish that no team in the NBA wants his poison to strangle their locker room. He is virtually unsignable because of his lack of respect in any establishment.  Allen Iverson is facing a tough decision: either suck it up and come off of the bench… or enjoy life without basketball.

Obama’s bow incident way overblown

24 11 2009

As we discussed in class, Barack Obama has been at the center of some international controversy over the nature of his greeting bow which was caught on camera last week.

I personally feel that this controversy single handedly displays why the news media is often mistrusted.  How can this be national news when there are so many more things that should make headlines over it? What about talking about unemployment? What about the recession?

Instead, we had to watch our president bow… and then do a long analysis on it!

If I were to weigh in on the situation, I would say to give the guy a break, he is a tall guy, and probably just thought it was nice to go down to eye level!

Carrie Prejean needs a clue

24 11 2009

Former Miss California needs a serious hint from some close friends or professionals if she plans on ever being taken seriously again.

In my opinion, the only way to get out of any public scandal is not to take the high road.  It also is definitely not about being “right”.  The only way to get out of any public scandal is to be completely honest, and to apologize as if it were honest.

Ms. Prejean took a turn for the absolute worst when she made her appearance on Larry King Live.  Even if she had an agreement to not discuss her tape before going on the show, stating in a very “bitchy” manner that “Larry, you are being unprofessional,” was no way to get out of the scenario.  She showed absolutely no remorse, and in fact, she was acting as if it didn’t really matter.

Larry wasn’t asking for a deposition, he simply wanted to know how she felt about the situation.  Carrie Prejean tried to knock down Larry King on his own show!

Next time, I think Carrie needs to understand that if she wants people to like her again, she has to give people something to like.  It is a natural conclusion: people enjoy nice and truthful people.

First, however, I think Carrie needs to do some searching into how she actually feels about her situation.

SHARPT Communications formed to partner with UT Austin

24 11 2009

The following is part of our class project:

SHARPT Communications was formed in September of 2009 at the University of Texas at Austin at the request of Jeff Hunt and Paul Walker, professors of a Public Relations Strategies class.  SHARPT was given the assignment to work closely with their client, The University of Texas at Austin, to create a carefully coordinated and calculated campaign that would serve to dispel myths about the funding and financial state of the University of Texas in the eyes of their donors, students, alumni, and general public.

SHARPT Communications consists of a team of seven diverse and highly motivated partners who all strive to someday practice public relations after they graduate from the university.  In the meantime, they sharpen their skills by taking on projects such as their current endeavor with the University of Texas at Austin.

BCS

10 11 2009

In the final stretch and gearing up for our client presentation, it was very good to see a real presentation from Jeff about the BCS.

Overall, he was extremely professional, and it is clear that his team is very skilled in giving presentation.  They found the smallest details and implemented them so that the presentation flowed smoothly and linked together.  Even using pictures to indicate a pattern that would be followed seemed like nothing less than pure genius to me at the time.

Too see how they didn’t get the business and still had such a professional and well thought out plan makes me realize that in the real world, there is a lot of great competition.  It didn’t matter if they did everything perfect, if the client didn’t completely identify with the intricacies of their campaign, they weren’t going to get the business, and they didn’t.  This is really a humbling fact, and it makes the things that we learn in class that much more important, because maybe the knowledge that we are in-taking can be used to put us over the edge later on in life!

Our group is already talking about how we can be extra efficient in our presentation so that we can flow and be memorable to the audience, just like the BCS presentation.  We are looking for trends in our presentation so that we can package it in a more desirable way. We fully acknowledge that we dont need to be as professional as Jeff’s presentation, but we would like to try to emulate the professional deliver as close as possible.

Focus!

10 11 2009

Last week our group, SHARPT, conducted a highly successful focus group.  We had six participants and they were all highly open to sharing their opinions.  We had a favorable range of participants; consisting of recent grads, to a grad student still at UT, to alumni who have been removed for 10, 20, and beyond.  With this, we were able to see how their mindsets differed, and perhaps most importantly, what they were all equally passionate about.

We found that focus group technique is perhaps more beneficial when casual.  We took a very laid back approach to conducting the focus group, and we came with questions that we felt walked the border between too targeted and open enough to call for an honest response.  The entirety of the focus group took nearly an hour, and we felt that they were engaged the entire time.

Perhaps the best thing about the group was that we were able to see where participants agreed.  When one person said something specific, and other people felt the same way, they all felt obliged to chip in, and state their own personal identification with the concept.  This allowed us to see how focus groups are perhaps the most efficient way in tailoring our response as a firm personally to the target audience.  We can now say that we have first hand research with what makes our audience happy.

I wish I could go into projects specifics, and the things that we learned specifically, but our company has a strict policy and we do not discuss intimate client details, especially when customers are involved.

Hitting on all cylinders

3 11 2009

Our group has been working on all cylinders recently, and it is really starting to show in the progress that we have been making. We have made significant strides regarding where we see our project ending up, and we are preparing for the last segment of our data collecting so that we can properly decide if the measures that we want to take are going to work. Our final step is going to be conducting a focus group tomorrow with alumni from the University of Texas.

Our group, SHARPT, is extremely excited about this, and we feel that everything is hitting right on time for us. We plan on asking some direct questions and playing off of their questions so that we can really peel back the layers on what makes alumni interested in learning. We are eager to see what the data looks like during as well as after the group session so that we can confirm or change some of the paths that we are looking to take.

We are about to launch our official company blog now that we are going to be operating publicly, prior to this point everything was internal and not quite suitable content for internet publication.

Stay tuned for updates!

-P
